While the verification process is still ongoing for National Champions, CrossFit HQ made official the top 20 worldwide athletes from the 2019 CrossFit Open. With that they announced the a number of penalties — one which caused a massive social media uproar among fans and athletes. More on that in a minute. The Open leaderboard. More than 1,000 gyms have pledged to stop using the CrossFit name, the sport's top athletes have said they are boycotting the CrossFit Games and companies such as Reebok and Rogue Fitness have.

It’s been a couple of days since my last post about an elite Regional athlete competing with a fake profile/alias on a top scoring team during the CrossFit Games Team Series 2015. Standing 6’4 and weighing in at 250# this athlete’s profile has a stated 325# Clean and Jerk, a 250# Snatch, a 615# Dead Lift and a 540# Back Squat. The photos I’ve seen of him look like he should be co-starring with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Problem is, this elite athlete is only 33 years old… and the team he posted scores with was a Masters team (minimum age requirement of 40 years as of July 15, 2015) from a well known CrossFit Affiliate. In fact, he was on their Regional Team in 2014. He’s also a coach. The fake profile he admits he created stated he was 43 years old.

Let’s just say I hope my skin is thick enough to handle the responsibility of the discussions that are taking place on various forums and in boxes all over the world. It’s a bit leathery, but that is mostly because I spent a lot of time in my youth on a beach using baby oil for sunscreen. Not ‘Magda’ thick, but I’m hoping it holds.

Aside from the various emails and calls I’ve received (mostly in support), I’ve been asked if I think online comps are the same as local comps, specifically ones with thousands of people I don’t know. They’re not, obviously. But if it’s an online comp does that mean it’s OK to fudge the scores? Do you need to have someone who doesn’t know you witness the reps for them to be completely accurate? If you think “everyone else is cheating anyway” does it make it OK to do it as well?

I’m pretty sure that most Games athletes would agree that the scores submitted during the CrossFit Games Open are supposed to be accurate. That includes the Masters and Teen divisions as well. Why would the Team Series be any different? Duel masters video game. And what about the sponsors who have expanded the Team Series to include a purse of $151,000, another $1,000 from PurePharma to three amateur teams and shoes and swag from Reebok? Do these sponsors expect the competition to be legitimate? Or is it for just for funzies?

You know… kind of like playing “Go Fish” but with the cards faced up?

If you asked the man 60 Minutes crowned the “King of CrossFit” founder Greg Glassman, or Director of CrossFit Games “The” Dave Castro if accurate online score submissions matter, what do you think they’d say? Contra cheats nes game genie. I know what their rules say because they’re posted online and pretty specific.

There aren’t any prizes for the Masters division <insert sad face here> but I don’t know if that really matters. Or does it? Because one one of the questions I was asked recently went something like this:

Crossfit Games Open Cheating Game

“If a prize was accepted, I could see you being slighted. If they allowed their scores to stand I could see you being slighted. If they had come in 100 and you came in 101, would you have even cared?”

Why do I care, anyway? I’ve had a couple of people comment that I have “waaaaaaaay too much time on my hands” and “don’t you have anything better to do than police CrossFit websites?” Those were actually from friends of Michael Clancy and/or members of CrossFit Shrewsbury. I get it. I really do.

Again, here’s where I hope my skin stays thick enough. My answer is yes. I have a lot of better things to do than to police the world and I don’t have gratuitous amounts of time to spend on things that I wish weren’t a part of the CrossFit story. I guess I care because I hold hope that most of us in the CrossFit community don’t want this to become some sort of cultural acceptance. I’m hoping for change. Positive change.

In one of the Masters forums yesterday a friend of the 33 year old athlete raised a good point: there are always at least two sides to the story. That got me thinking. I have a hard time understanding the intent of the Affiliate and athlete who posted scores with a known fake profile but somewhere there had to be a good reason (hopefully). Right? Maybe we should ask Michael Clancy himself. Crimson thief cheats.

Michael Clancy and I chatted last night. He shared his story and to his credit he was extremely transparent and forthright. He also made it clear that he wants to assume all liability for Clancy Michaels and that his Affiliate did nothing wrong. I don’t want to put words into his mouth so I’m not going to post our discussion here. Instead, I’ve invited him to share his side on my blog and I’ve promised I would not edit or alter his words. Everyone deserves to be heard, even if you don’t agree.

Do I understand why he did what he did? Yes… mostly. Do I agree? Nope. I do believe he doesn’t think what he did was “cheating”.

Do I think he’s sorry? That depends. Right now I think he’s sorry he got caught. And if not “caught” then at least caught up in this mess.
